Session 1

What is special education? (1.5 hours)

At the end of this session, special educators will be able to:

  • Understand the different buckets of education (Content, Process, Product).

  • Understand the difference between modification and differentiation.

  • Understand the different type of disabilities.

  • Understand the difference between an IEP and a 504 and their implications for testing accommodations.


Session 2

Classifications – Learning Profile (1.5 hours)

At the end of this session, new speducators will be able to:

  • Understand high incidence disabilities and how to utilize strategies that will help students to access common core standards through a learning profile activity.

Session 3

Evaluations and Data Tracking/Reporting (1.5 hours)

At the end of this session, new speducators will be able to:

  • Understand the different kind of evaluations that exist within the special education framework.

  • Understand the review process and documentation needed to facilitate review meetings.

  • Understand the purpose of FBAs and BIPs (practice writing one).

  • Understand the process for a manifestation determination review.


Session 4

IEP and Goal Writing (1.5 hours)

At the end of this session, new speducators will be able to:

  • Understand the writing process for IEP’s (interactive practice).

  • Understand how to develop and write IEP goals that are actionable, relevant and specific to the learning needs of their student (interactive practice).
